Audition your pieces!
Have you ever had the notion that once you buy something for your home, you should love it and it should just work? And how many times has that not been the case? You bought that picture that you knew would just be perfect for the space above your bed only to get it home to find out that it’s just not going to work. Instead of getting frustrated and beating yourself up about it, (oh wait, am I the only one that did that?) change your approach.
Give yourself the space to fall in or out of love with a piece. This is what I call “auditioning your pieces”. Buy the piece you like. Try it in the spot that you want for a weak or so. If it doesn’t make your heart sing, don’t force it. Return it. Find another place for it. If you can't find another spot for it, you can add it to your décor cache’ or worst yet just sell it. (I’ll explain the décor cache’ and its importance next week.)
I have a number of pieces that I have bought with the vision of it going into a certain location only for it to end up in a completely different room. It happened with this clock. I saw it and loved it and knew the perfect spot for it was going to be in my kitchen banquet area. Nope! Sadly as soon as I got it in there I knew it was not quite it. I tried in our office. Not bold enough. Above the fireplace? Close but still not it. Finally after much auditioning, I found the perfect spot for it is in outside in our screened in patio.
The same happened for a pair of paintings that I purchased. I just knew they would work in the guest bathroom. Come to find out, they were meant to be in our guest bedroom. And they look lovely in there.
It is your home and you should love it. If you find a piece that you like, audition it!. You will be amazed at how much it feels like winning the décor jackpot with a lot less stress.
